The LEIC-BSC and the LEIHS are banding together to publish a cookbook highlighting the stories and foods of the Lake ErieIslands. Each section of the book will include recipes for foods that have been found or traditionally grown on the islands with stories and photos of the people who made them. So, If your Aunt Mable made the best grape pie, you can send in her recipes, a story about her, and a photo. If Uncle John ice fished and built his own smoker, you can send in his photo and recipe. Sections will include weeds and other edibles from the yard, fish, wild game (a recipe for rabbit has already come in), wine and grapes, maple syrup, garden delights, black walnuts elderberries and much much more. During this holiday season, when family gatherings turn to family story telling, think about the traditions in your family and write them down for inclusion in this cookbook. Recipes and stories should be submitted by Jan 1, 2009 and the cookbook will be available at the Lake Erie Islands Nature and WildlifeCenter in May 2009. Information can be sent to Valerie Mettler, P.O. Box 424, Put-in-Bay, Ohio43456 or email
